Why the 2020 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series Was Called Off

Many sporting activities came to a halt in the early months of 2020, thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic taking its toll all over the world. World Rugby wasn’t left behind either with most matches being postponed to later days. The safety of players, fans, and the world, in general, was of higher priority than the games. The World Rugby Seven Series announced in March that Women’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series was postponed.

Suspension of the Women’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series Tournament

World Rugby postponed the women’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, which was to take place in Stellenbosch, South Africa, on 28th March 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Initially, it was thought that the tournament would continue as planned. There was a possibility that some matches would be played behind closed doors. But the new coronavirus spread fast and wide, prompting World Rugby to call off the HSBC World Rugby Seven Series and other rugby matches. Also, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and relevant public authorities had issued health and travel guidelines and restrictions. This made it impossible for players and the coaching staff to travel, even if matches were to be played behind closed doors. Owing to the unpredictability of the COVID-19 disease, World Rugby didn’t announce immediately when the tournament could resume.

Other Postponed or Suspended Rugby Matches

As mentioned above, many rugby games were postponed due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus. Organisers for the Guinness Six Nations called off the tournament without stating when it would resume. The accompanying women and Under-20s’ fixtures were also postponed. Further, all RFU activity and European competitions were suspended indefinitely. And the Super League games were delayed until April at the earliest. The Premiership Rugby Cup Final and the Gallagher Premiership, which had been scheduled for 15th March and 16th March respectively were also called off and delayed until later in the year.
